The Wind Rises does a similar thing where it's a man's life combined with some social commentary. I'm only saying some narrative decisions were made to show more than just a 1:1 biography of his experiences. (and I'm not talking down on Japan, the citizens didn't have control over what their country was doing, and the country was adhering to the rules that it followed for centuries)Įdit: with regards to it being based off of a real man's life, I know. Pride was their downfall yes, but at the same time they were children who did not know any better. It's easy to say that these kids are all in the wrong, but there's two sides to it. That pride was what caused the war to be prolonged instead of reaching a conclusion. ![]() They did everything to preserve their Empire and Emperor, at the cost of millions of lives. ![]() In a similar way Imperial Japan had a certain set of values that they followed with zeal, even during war. He was just using the values he was taught like protecting his sister but at the same time keeping her happy (which costs them their lives). There were many moments where his hubris caught up with him and you are supposed to feel frustrated with him as the audience.īut then you need to take a step back and realize he's a child and he didn't know any better. A lot of people think he can represent Imperial Japan getting into the war.
